Tip: 2–3 inches is the usual depth for a mulch refresh; 3–4 inches for a new bed. Round bags up — it's better to have a little extra.

How to calculate how much mulch you need

Mulch is sold by volume, so the math is just area × depth. Measure the length and width of your bed in feet, decide how deep you want the mulch, and convert that depth from inches to feet (divide by 12). Multiply the three together for cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.

  • Cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft)
  • Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
  • Bags = cubic feet ÷ bag size (2 or 3 cu ft), rounded up

For an oddly shaped bed, break it into rectangles, figure each one, and add them up — or skip the arithmetic and use the calculator above.

The mulch mistake almost everyone makes

People nail the square footage, then pile the mulch on too thick — or heap it against the trunk in what arborists call a "mulch volcano." Once you get much past 3–4 inches (or bury the stem), you trap moisture against the bark, starve the roots of air, and invite rot and pests. The sweet spot is 2–3 inches, pulled back a few inches from trunks and stems.

Wrong: a mulch volcano piled up against the tree trunk. Right: a flat mulch donut, 2 to 3 inches deep, pulled back from the trunk.

This is exactly why the depth setting in the calculator matters: set it to 2–3 inches for a refresh and you'll get an honest number — instead of over-ordering a pile you shouldn't be using anyway.

Pro move: round up a little. Beds settle and never sit perfectly flat, so buying about 10% over the exact figure means you finish the job in one trip instead of running back for one more bag.

How deep should mulch be?

SituationRecommended depth
Refreshing existing mulch1–2 inches
Standard flower or shrub bed2–3 inches
New bed / heavy weed control3–4 inches
Around trees (keep off the trunk)2–3 inches

Going deeper than about 4 inches can smother roots and hold too much moisture, so more isn't always better.

How many bags of mulch in a yard?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. So a cubic yard is about 13–14 bags of 2-cubic-foot mulch, or 9 bags of 3-cubic-foot mulch. If you need more than about 6–8 bags, buying mulch in bulk by the yard is usually cheaper than bagged.

Mulch calculator FAQ

How much does a yard of mulch cover?
At 2 inches deep, one cubic yard covers about 160 square feet. At 3 inches, about 108 square feet. At 4 inches, about 81 square feet.
How many cubic feet is a bag of mulch?
Bagged mulch is most commonly 2 cubic feet; some brands sell 3-cubic-foot bags. Check the bag — the calculator lets you pick either.
Should I add extra for waste?
It's smart to round up and add a little. Settling, uneven ground, and spillage mean you'll almost always use slightly more than the exact number.
