Clogged gutters cause some of the most expensive water damage a house can take — and clearing them is one afternoon of work. Here’s how to do it safely, how to actually check the downspouts, and whether guards are worth the money.

Why fall gutters matter (do it after the leaves drop)

Clogged gutters are the quiet cause of some of the most expensive damage a house takes: water backs up under the shingles, overflows against the siding, pools at the foundation, and freezes into ice dams once winter hits. The fix is an afternoon of work. Time it for late fall, after most of the leaves are down — clean too early and you’ll just be back up the ladder in three weeks.

The safe way to clean them

Falls from ladders send thousands to the ER every fall — set up before you climb. Use a stable extension ladder with a stand-off stabilizer so it rests on the roof, not the gutter you’re about to clean. Wear gloves, hang a bucket off the ladder, and work in one direction with a gutter scoop. Never lean past your belt buckle — move the ladder instead.

Flush it and check the downspouts

Scooping is only half of it — the downspouts are where clogs actually cause overflow. Once the troughs are clear, run a hose from the far end and watch each downspout run clean. If one’s blocked, a plumber’s snake or a spray from the bottom usually clears it. Finish by adding downspout extensions so water lands at least four feet from the foundation.

Gutter guards: are they worth it?

If you’ve got tall trees, gutter guards can cut cleaning from a few times a year to about once. They’re not magic — fine debris and pine needles still get through, and cheap ones can actually make things worse — but a decent micro-mesh or reverse-curve guard is a fair trade for anyone tired of the ladder. DIY snap-in mesh is the budget route; pro-installed systems cost more but last.

While you’re up there: inspect

The ladder’s already set up — give the system a once-over. Look for sagging sections (a loose hanger or too-flat pitch), rust or seam leaks, and any soft, stained fascia board behind the gutter, which signals water’s been getting in. Catching a $10 bracket now beats replacing rotted trim next spring. If the gutters pull away from the house or leak at every seam, it may be time to price a replacement.
